They can be one of two types. A chart or graph type allows you to follow the pattern visually and is often used when more than one color of yarn is used within the same row of the pattern, such as for Fair Isle knits. They are written in a square grid, with each square representing one stitch and containing a symbol depicting the type of stitch to be made. Other knitting patterns are made up of written instructions for following the stitch pattern line-by-line. These types of patterns use a lot of abbreviations which can confuse a beginner, but following the instructions correctly is just a matter of understanding the language of knitters. A glossary of terms can be extremely helpful.

The good ones will include a photo of the finished item, a list of all the materials needed, information on the correct guage, a list of the abbreviations used, and specific instructions for creating the stitch pattern, if necessary. You’ll want to make sure you eliminate any surprises by reading the pattern thoroughly before you begin your project.

It’s highly recommended that you check your tension first, by making a gauge swatch - you have to knit in the gauge described in the pattern so that you end up with the correct measurements for your finished project. Some patterns can take many weeks to finish, so take the time to do this step first, and save yourself from a big headache later.

For those of us that have to deal with the cold weather for much of the year, chase away those chills with knitting patterns for woolly mittens, cuddly scarves, cosy hats and comfy socks. All of these itms will help to fight off the wintry chill and keep you warm and comfortable. They also make great gifts for loved ones and are on the "much needed" list of many charities.
